ALA 100 - Wayfinding (Group 27) - Fall 2008
As a group, we discovered Tufesen, an international bus station. Busses take people back and forth to Mexico and Arizona. This was an important discovery because it represented the rich culture that we were brought into for our wayfinding assignment. Traveling down 27th avenue, we noticed a heavy influx of Hispanics and businesses catering to the heavy Hispanic populations. A large majority of signs were in Spanish and almost everyone we tried talking to spoke broken English or only Spanish. Tufesen was located on 27th avenue and McDowell road. While traveling down our assigned bus route, we saw a large gathering of people outside of Tufesen. This immediately caught our attention, so we decided to get off our bus and investigate. The smell of heavy diesel fumes filled our nostrils are we approached closer to the station. Our techniques for making our discovery were to closely pay attention to our surroundings. When we first got on our assigned bus route, everyone was told to closely look out the window for an interesting discovery. Once we spotted the international bus station from our bus, we wanted to further explore. We wanted to get closer to the station and its surroundings to have a deeper experience than just glancing at the bus station and taking a picture. We walked around the busses, explored the station, and even interviewed a family traveling in order to fully captivate the experience of our discovery. Riding the bus definitely made us aware that there is more to our environment than what we see daily around Tempe. Different environments bring different cultures. Also, we noticed that environments change as geographical location changes. Some people are used to their environments, we asked someone on the bus how they would feel if they lived in Tempe. She simply replied, I couldnt do it, it just wouldnt feel like home. Her statement implying that she was comfortable and felt safe with the environment she was surrounded by daily unlike us who were just visiting.
